Featured article : Working Part Time for Seniors - What are the options?

  3. by Alden Smith

Many senior citizens that have retired from the work force find themselves sitting around with nothing to do, and being bored out of their minds.  They have spent a lifetime where the job and workplace has been a major part of their lives, and now face the reality of nowhere to go from 9 to 5.  if you are in this position, and want to fill up a few extra hours and have spending money, considering a part time job is just the cures for the retirement blues.

Employers who hire senior citizens for part time work have a good head on their shoulders.  They are hiring a worker who has a lot of experience in the work place, does not ahve all the distractions like a growing family to worry about, and they can be flexible on hours.  Studies show that the fastest growing work group in the United States is now seniors.

Being a senior citizen does not mean that you do not have a lot to offer the work place.  Years of experience in many fields and a good work ethic are one of the things employers look for.  Many employers are short handed, and the senior citizen working part time helps fill that void.  It not only makes good sense for the employer, but helps improve the economy because now seniors have extra income for needed items.  This also helps increase the demand for more product.  And as this demand grows, more jobs are created.  It is a win-win situation for all concerned.

Why would an employer be interested in hiring a person who has reached retirement age?  Quite simply, these mature, experienced individuals already know the score - they know what is needed in the workplace, and know what it takes to meet the needs of the company.  They are dependable, and know that this quality makes them a valuable resource. Employers also know that the younger men and women in the workplace have no idea how much dependability means to a company.

Another very good reason that creating part time jobs for seniors is so important is that many seniors need extra money that a part time job can produce for them.  Retirement funds and Social Security does not often meet the needs of retirees.  It may pay the bills for them, but does not provide enough income that insures a good quality of life.

If you are a senior citizen looking for part time work, it pays to visit the referral services in your area.  They can check your previous work history, and can question you on your general knowledge of your area of expertise.  This helps the referral service to match you with an opportunity that not only meets your needs, but that you are comfortable with.  More and more employers are coming to the realization that hiring part time retired seniors only makes good sense.  Part time work for seniors can only continue to grow.  Now, many companies have people working from home, "tele-commuting" to work.  The opportunities are endless...
